Well,mydears,hereiswhatyouhaveaskedfor:another"OzBook"aboutDorothy’sstrangeadventures.Totoisinthisstory,becauseyouwantedhimtobethere,andmanyothercharacterswhichyouwillrecognizeareinthestory,too.Indeed,thewishesofmylittlecorrespondentshavebeenconsideredascarefullyaspossible,andifthestoryisnotexactlyasyouwouldhavewrittenityourselves,youmustrememberthatastoryhastobeastorybeforeitcanbewrittendown,andthewritercannotchangeitmuchwithoutspoilingit.
Intheprefaceto"DorothyandtheWizardofOz"IsaidIwouldliketowritesomestoriesthatwerenot"Oz"stories,becauseIthoughtIhadwrittenaboutOzlongenough;butsincethatvolumewaspublishedIhavebeenfairlydelugedwithlettersfromchildrenimploringmeto"writemoreaboutDorothy,"and"moreaboutOz,"andsinceIwriteonlytopleasethechildrenIshalltrytorespecttheirwishes.
Therearesomenewcharactersinthisbookthatoughttowinyourlove.I’mveryfondoftheshaggymanmyself,andIthinkyouwilllikehim,too.AsforPolychrome—theRainbow’sDaughter—andstupidlittleButton-Bright,theyseemtohavebroughtanewelementoffunintotheseOzstories,andIamgladIdiscoveredthem.YetIamanxioustohaveyouwriteandtellmehowyoulikethem.
