           Hepulledhimselftogetheralmostinstantly,thoughthecolordidnotcomebacktohisfaceatonceandhisvoicewasnotsteadyforafewseconds.Buthelaughedoutrightathimself.

           “Ibegyourpardon,”heapologized.“Ihavebeenillandamrathernervous.Ithoughtyousaidsomethingyoucouldnotpossiblyhavesaid.Ialmostfrightenedyou.Andyouwereonlyspeakingofalittleplaymate.Pleasegoon.”

           “Iwasonlygoingtosaythatshewasfairlikethat,fairerthananyoneIhadeverseen;butwhenweplayedtogethersheseemedlikeanyotherchild.ShewasthefirstIeverknew.”

           Itoldhimaboutthemistydayonthemoor,andaboutthepaletroopersandthebig,leanleaderwhocarriedElspethbeforehimonhissaddle.Ihadnevertalkedtoanyoneaboutitbefore,noteventoJeanBraidfute.Butheseemedtobesointerested,asifthelittlestoryquitefascinatedhim.Itwasonlyanepisode,butitbroughtintheweirdnessofthemoorandmychildishfanciesaboutthethingshidinginthewhitemist,andthecastlefrowningonitsrock,andmybabyfacepressedagainstthenurserywindowinthetower,andAngusandthelibrary,andJeanandhergoodnessandwiseways.Itwasdreadfultotalksomuchaboutoneself.Buthelistenedso.Hiseyesneverleftmyface—theywatchedandheldmeasifhewereenthralled.Sometimesheaskedaquestion.

           “Iwonderwhotheywere—thehorsemen?”hepondered.
