           Shebegantorealizethatdeathwasnotinstoreforher,afterall,butthatshehadmerelystarteduponanotheradventure,whichpromisedtobejustasqueerandunusualaswerethoseshehadbeforeencountered.

           Withthisthoughtinmindthegirltookheartandleanedherheadoverthesideofthebuggytoseewherethestrangelightwascomingfrom.Farbelowhershefoundsixgreatglowingballssuspendedintheair.Thecentralandlargestonewaswhite,andremindedherofthesun.Arounditwerearranged,likethefivepointsofastar,theotherfivebrilliantballs;onebeingrosecolored,oneviolet,oneyellow,oneblueandoneorange.Thissplendidgroupofcoloredsunssentraysdartingineverydirection,andasthehorseandbuggy—withDorothyandZeb—sanksteadilydownwardandcamenearertothelights,theraysbegantotakeonallthedelicatetintingsofarainbow,growingmoreandmoredistincteverymomentuntilallthespacewasbrilliantlyilluminated.

           Dorothywastoodazedtosaymuch,butshewatchedoneofJim’sbigearsturntovioletandtheothertorose,andwonderedthathistailshouldbeyellowandhisbodystripedwithblueandorangelikethestripesofazebra.ThenshelookedatZeb,whosefacewasblueandwhosehairwaspink,andgavealittlelaughthatsoundedabitnervous.

           "Isn’titfunny?"shesaid.

           Theboywasstartledandhiseyeswerebig.Dorothyhadagreenstreakthroughthecenterofherfacewheretheblueandyellowlightscametogether,andherappearanceseemedtoaddtohisfright.

           "I—Idon’ts-s-seeany-thingfunny—’boutit!"hestammered.
