           Itledtoafarmhouse.WefoundPianiandBonellostoppedinthefarmyard.Thehousewaslowandlongwithatrelliswithagrape-vineoverthedoor.TherewasawellintheyardandPianiwasgettingupwatertofillhisradiator.Somuchgoinginlowgearhadboileditout.Thefarmhousewasdeserted.Ilookedbackdowntheroad,thefarmhousewasonaslightelevationabovetheplain,andwecouldseeoverthecountry,andsawtheroad,thehedges,thefieldsandthelineoftreesalongthemainroadwheretheretreatwaspassing.Thetwosergeantswerelookingthroughthehouse.Thegirlswereawakeandlookingatthecourtyard,thewellandthetwobigambulancesinfrontofthefarmhouse,withthreedriversatthewell.Oneofthesergeantscameoutwithaclockinhishand.

           "Putitback,"Isaid.Helookedatme,wentinthehouseandcamebackwithouttheclock.

           "Where’syourpartner?"Iasked.

           "He’sgonetothelatrine."Hegotupontheseatoftheambulance.Hewasafraidwewouldleavehim.
