           Inthenightmanypeasantshadjoinedthecolumnfromtheroadsofthecountryandinthecolumntherewerecartsloadedwithhouseholdgoods;thereweremirrorsprojectingupbetweenmattresses,andchickensandduckstiedtocarts.Therewasasewingmachineonthecartaheadofusintherain.Theyhadsavedthemostvaluablethings.Onsomecartsthewomensathuddledfromtherainandotherswalkedbesidethecartskeepingasclosetothemastheycould.Thereweredogsnowinthecolumn,keepingunderthewagonsastheymovedalong.Theroadwasmuddy,theditchesatthesidewerehighwithwaterandbeyondthetreesthatlinedtheroadthefieldslookedtoowetandtoosoggytotrytocross.Igotdownfromthecarandworkeduptheroadaway,lookingforaplacewhereIcouldseeaheadtofindaside-roadwecouldtakeacrosscountry.Iknewthereweremanyside-roadsbutdidnotwantonethatwouldleadtonothing.Icouldnotrememberthembecausewehadalwayspassedthembowlingalonginthecaronthemainroadandtheyalllookedmuchalike.NowIknewwemustfindoneifwehopedtogetthrough.NooneknewwheretheAustrianswerenorhowthingsweregoingbutIwascertainthatiftherainshouldstopandplanescomeoverandgettoworkonthatcolumnthatitwouldbeallover.Allthatwasneededwasforafewmentoleavetheirtrucksorafewhorsesbekilledtotieupcompletelythemovementontheroad.
