           “Doyouknow,”hesaid,“IhavespentthehappiesteveningsinyearssinceIhaveknownyou?”

           “Haveyou?”shesaid,withassumedairiness,butstillexcitedbytheconvictionwhichthetoneofhisvoicecarried.

           “Iwasgoingtotellyoutheotherevening,”headded,“butsomehowtheopportunityslippedaway.”

           Carriewaslisteningwithoutattemptingtoreply.Shecouldthinkofnothingworthwhiletosay.Despitealltheideasconcerningrightwhichhadtroubledhervaguelysinceshehadlastseenhim,shewasnowinfluencedagainstronglyinhisfavour.

           “Icameouthereto-day,”hewenton,solemnly,“totellyoujusthowIfeel—toseeifyouwouldn’tlistentome.”

           Hurstwoodwassomethingofaromanticistafterhiskind.Hewascapableofstrongfeelings—oftenpoeticones—andunderastressofdesire,suchasthepresent,hewaxedeloquent.
