           “Yes,”saidCarrie,haltingbeforehim,“Iwasjustpreparingtogoforawalkmyself.”

           “Oh,wereyou?”hesaid.“Supposing,then,yougetyourhatandwebothgo?”

           TheycrossedtheparkandwentwestalongWashingtonBoulevard,beautifulwithitsbroadmacadamisedroad,andlargeframehousessetbackfromthesidewalks.ItwasastreetwheremanyofthemoreprosperousresidentsoftheWestSidelived,andHurstwoodcouldnothelpfeelingnervousoverthepublicityofit.Theyhadgonebutafewblockswhenaliverystablesigninoneofthesidestreetssolvedthedifficultyforhim.HewouldtakehertodrivealongthenewBoulevard.

           TheBoulevardatthattimewaslittlemorethanacountryroad.ThepartheintendedshowingherwasmuchfartheroutonthissameWestSide,wheretherewasscarcelyahouse.ItconnectedDouglasParkwithWashingtonorSouthPark,andwasnothingmorethananeatlymaderoad,runningduesouthforsomefivemilesoveranopen,grassyprairie,andthendueeastoverthesamekindofprairieforthesamedistance.Therewasnotahousetobeencounteredanywherealongthelargerpartoftheroute,andanyconversationwouldbepleasantlyfreeofinterruption.

           Atthestablehepickedagentlehorse,andtheyweresoonoutofrangeofeitherpublicobservationorhearing.

           “Canyoudrive?”hesaid,afteratime.

           “Inevertried,”saidCarrie.

           Heputthereinsinherhand,andfoldedhisarms.

           “Youseethere’snothingtoitmuch,”hesaid,smilingly.

           “Notwhenyouhaveagentlehorse,”saidCarrie.
