DuringtheconfusionandbewildermentoftheseconddayMaryhidherselfinthenurseryandwasforgottenbyeveryone.Nobodythoughtofher,nobodywantedher,andstrangethingshappenedofwhichsheknewnothing.Maryalternatelycriedandsleptthroughthehours.Sheonlyknewthatpeoplewereillandthatsheheardmysteriousandfrighteningsounds.Onceshecreptintothedining-roomandfounditempty,thoughapartlyfinishedmealwasonthetableandchairsandplateslookedasiftheyhadbeenhastilypushedbackwhenthedinersrosesuddenlyforsomereason.Thechildatesomefruitandbiscuits,andbeingthirstyshedrankaglassofwinewhichstoodnearlyfilled.Itwassweet,andshedidnotknowhowstrongitwas.Verysoonitmadeherintenselydrowsy,andshewentbacktohernurseryandshutherselfinagain,frightenedbycriessheheardinthehutsandbythehurryingsoundoffeet.Thewinemadehersosleepythatshecouldscarcelykeephereyesopenandshelaydownonherbedandknewnothingmoreforalongtime.
