           Themoorwashiddeninmistwhenthemorningcame,andtherainhadnotstoppedpouringdown.Therecouldbenogoingoutofdoors.MarthawassobusythatMaryhadnoopportunityoftalkingtoher,butintheafternoonsheaskedhertocomeandsitwithherinthenursery.Shecamebringingthestockingshewasalwaysknittingwhenshewasdoingnothingelse.

           Marthaletherknittingdroponherkneeandgazedatherwithstartledeyes.

           “Ihearditinthenight,”Marywenton.“AndIgotupandwenttoseewhereitcamefrom.ItwasColin.Ifoundhim.”

           Martha’sfacebecameredwithfright.

           “Eh!MissMary!”shesaidhalfcrying.“Tha’shouldn’thavedoneit—tha’shouldn’t!Tha’llgetmeintrouble.Inevertoldtheenothin’abouthim—buttha’llgetmeintrouble.Ishalllosemyplaceandwhat’llmotherdo!”
