           Hesaiditallsolikeahealthyboy—hisfaceflushed,hiswordstumblingovereachotherinhiseagerness—thatMr.Craven’ssoulshookwithunbelievingjoy.

           Colinputouthishandandlaiditonhisfather’sarm.

           “Aren’tyouglad,Father?”heended.“Aren’tyouglad?I’mgoingtoliveforeverandeverandever!”

           Mr.Cravenputhishandsonboththeboy’sshouldersandheldhimstill.Heknewhedarednoteventrytospeakforamoment.

           “Takemeintothegarden,myboy,”hesaidatlast.“Andtellmeallaboutit.”

           Andsotheyledhimin.

           Theplacewasawildernessofautumngoldandpurpleandvioletblueandflamingscarletandoneverysideweresheavesoflateliliesstandingtogether—lilieswhichwerewhiteorwhiteandruby.Herememberedwellwhenthefirstofthemhadbeenplantedthatjustatthisseasonoftheyeartheirlategloriesshouldrevealthemselves.Laterosesclimbedandhungandclusteredandthesunshinedeepeningthehueoftheyellowingtreesmadeonefeelthatone,stoodinanemboweredtempleofgold.Thenewcomerstoodsilentjustasthechildrenhaddonewhentheycameintoitsgrayness.Helookedroundandround.

           “Ithoughtitwouldbedead,”hesaid.

           “Marythoughtsoatfirst,”saidColin.“Butitcamealive.”

           Thentheysatdownundertheirtree—allbutColin,whowantedtostandwhilehetoldthestory.
