           Whilethesecretgardenwascomingaliveandtwochildrenwerecomingalivewithit,therewasamanwanderingaboutcertainfar-awaybeautifulplacesintheNorwegianfiordsandthevalleysandmountainsofSwitzerlandandhewasamanwhofortenyearshadkepthismindfilledwithdarkandheart-brokenthinking.Hehadnotbeencourageous;hehadnevertriedtoputanyotherthoughtsintheplaceofthedarkones.Hehadwanderedbybluelakesandthoughtthem;hehadlainonmountain-sideswithsheetsofdeepbluegentiansbloomingallabouthimandflowerbreathsfillingalltheairandhehadthoughtthem.Aterriblesorrowhadfallenuponhimwhenhehadbeenhappyandhehadlethissoulfillitselfwithblacknessandhadrefusedobstinatelytoallowanyriftoflighttopiercethrough.Hehadforgottenanddesertedhishomeandhisduties.Whenhetraveledabout,darknesssobroodedoverhimthatthesightofhimwasawrongdonetootherpeoplebecauseitwasasifhepoisonedtheairabouthimwithgloom.Moststrangersthoughthemustbeeitherhalfmadoramanwithsomehiddencrimeonhissoul.He,wasatallmanwithadrawnfaceandcrookedshouldersandthenamehealwaysenteredonhotelregisterswas,“ArchibaldCraven,MisselthwaiteManor,Yorkshire,England.”
