Buttheywoundinandoutamongtheshrubberyandoutandroundthefountainbeds,followingtheircarefullyplannedrouteforthemeremysteriouspleasureofit.ButwhenatlasttheyturnedintotheLongWalkbytheiviedwallstheexcitedsenseofanapproachingthrillmadethem,forsomecuriousreasontheycouldnothaveexplained,begintospeakinwhispers.

“Andthat,”saidMarywithsolemndelight,pointingunderabiglilacbush,“iswhereheperchedonthelittleheapofearthandshowedmethekey.”
ThenColinsatup.
“Where?Where?There?”hecried,andhiseyeswereasbigasthewolf’sinRedRiding-Hood,whenRedRiding-Hoodfeltcalledupontoremarkonthem.Dickonstoodstillandthewheeledchairstopped.
“Andthis,”saidMary,steppingontothebedclosetotheivy,“iswhereIwenttotalktohimwhenhechirpedatmefromthetopofthewall.Andthisistheivythewindblewback,”andshetookholdofthehanginggreencurtain
