Sheranasquicklyasshecouldtothegarden.ShehadbeenawaysomuchlongerthanshehadthoughtsheshouldandsheknewDickonwouldhavetosetoutearlyonhisfive-milewalk.Whensheslippedthroughthedoorundertheivy,shesawhewasnotworkingwhereshehadlefthim.Thegardeningtoolswerelaidtogetherunderatree.Sherantothem,lookingallroundtheplace,buttherewasnoDickontobeseen.Hehadgoneawayandthesecretgardenwasempty—exceptfortherobinwhohadjustflownacrossthewallandsatonastandardrose-bushwatchingher.
“He’sgone,”shesaidwoefully.“Oh!washe—washe—washeonlyawoodfairy?”
Somethingwhitefastenedtothestandardrose-bushcaughthereye.Itwasapieceofpaper,infact,itwasapieceofthelettershehadprintedforMarthatosendtoDickon.Itwasfastenedonthebushwithalongthorn,andinaminutesheknewDickonhadleftitthere.Thereweresomeroughlyprintedlettersonitandasortofpicture.Atfirstshecouldnottellwhatitwas.Thenshesawitwasmeantforanestwithabirdsittingonit.Underneathweretheprintedlettersandtheysaid:
“Iwillcumbak.”
