           AlanandIsatdowntobreakfastaboutsixoftheclock.Thefloorwascoveredwithbrokenglassandinahorridmessofblood,whichtookawaymyhunger.Inallotherwayswewereinasituationnotonlyagreeablebutmerry;havingoustedtheofficersfromtheirowncabin,andhavingatcommandallthedrinkintheshipbothwineandspiritsandallthedaintypartofwhatwaseatable,suchasthepicklesandthefinesortofbread.This,ofitself,wasenoughtosetusingoodhumour,buttherichestpartofitwasthis,thatthetwothirstiestmenthatevercameoutofScotland(Mr.Shuanbeingdead)werenowshutinthefore-partoftheshipandcondemnedtowhattheyhatedmostcoldwater.

           “Anddependuponit,”Alansaid,“weshallhearmoreofthemerelong.Yemaykeepamanfromthefighting,butneverfromhisbottle.”

           Wemadegoodcompanyforeachother.Alan,indeed,expressedhimselfmostlovingly;andtakingaknifefromthetable,cutmeoffoneofthesilverbuttonsfromhiscoat.
