Thislaststatementappearedtometobesostartling,thatIcouldhardlybelievethathewasinhissobersenses. Therewasthedeaddog,however,toprovethathisconjecturehadbeencorrect. Itseemedtomethatthemistsinmyownmindweregraduallyclearingaway,andIbegantohaveadim,vagueperceptionofthetruth.

Thismurderwouldhavebeeninfinitelymoredifficulttounravelhadthebodyofthevictimbeensimplyfoundlyingintheroadwaywithoutanyofthoseoutréandsensationalaccompanimentswhichhaverendereditremarkable. Thesestrangedetails,farfrommakingthecasemoredifficult,havereallyhadtheeffectofmakingitlessso.”
