“Idon’tfearthem,ortheirwarrant,”Hopesaid,earnestly. “Youmustknowsomethingofthismatter,Cowper. Iconjureyoubyeverythingyouholddeartoanswerafewquestions. Wehavealwaysbeenfriends. ForGod’ssake,don’trefusetoanswerme.”
“Whatisit?”theMormonaskeduneasily. “Bequick. Theveryrockshaveearsandthetreeseyes.”
“WhathasbecomeofLucyFerrier?”
“ShewasmarriedyesterdaytoyoungDrebber. Holdup,man,holdup,youhavenolifeleftinyou.”
“Don’tmindme,”saidHopefaintly.Hewaswhitetotheverylips,andhadsunkdownonthestoneagainstwhichhehadbeenleaning. “Married,yousay?”
