ThethingthatmostinterestedClydeatfirstwashow,ifatall,hewastokeepthemajorportionofallthismoneyhewasmakingforhimself.Foreversincehehadbeenworkingandearningmoney,ithadbeenassumedthathewouldcontributeafairportionofallthathereceived—atleastthree-fourthsofthesmallersalarieshehadreceiveduptothistime—towardtheupkeepofthehome.Butnow,ifheannouncedthathewasreceivingatleasttwenty-fivedollarsaweekandmore—andthisentirelyapartfromthesalaryoffifteenamonthandboard—hisparentswouldassuredlyexpecthimtopaytenortwelve.
Butsolonghadhebeenhauntedbythedesiretomakehimselfasattractivelookingasanyotherwell-dressedboythat,nowthathehadtheopportunity,hecouldnotresistthetemptationtoequiphimselffirstandasspeedilyaspossible.Accordingly,hedecidedtosaytohismotherthatallofthetipshereceivedaggregatednomorethanadollaraday.And,inordertogivehimselfgreaterfreedomofactioninthematterofdisposingofhissparetime,heannouncedthatfrequently,inadditiontothelonghoursdemandedofhimeveryotherday,hewasexpectedtotaketheplaceofotherboyswhoweresickorsettodoingotherthings.Andalso,heexplainedthatthemanagementdemandedofallboysthattheylookwelloutsideaswellasinsidethehotel.Hecouldnotlongbeseencomingtothehotelintheclothesthathenowwore.Mr.Squires,hesaid,hadhintedasmuch.
