Hewouldjustliketositdownsomeday—hereorsomewhere—andtellhimallandgethimtosayhowreallyguilty,ifatall,hethoughthimtobe—andifsoguiltytogethimtoprayforhim.Attimeshefeltsosurethathismother’sandtheRev.DuncanMcMillan’sprayerswoulddohimsomuchmoregoodwiththisGodthananyprayersofhisownwould.Somehowhecouldn’tprayyet.AndattimeshearingMcMillanpray,softlyandmelodiously,hisvoiceenteringthroughthebars—or,readingfromGalatians,Thessalonians,Corinthians,hefeltasthoughhemusttellhimeverything,andsoon.
Butthedaysgoingbyuntilfinallyonedaysixweeksafter—andwhenbecauseofhissilenceinregardtohimself,theRev.Duncanwasbeginningtodespairofeveraffectinghiminanywaytowardhispropercontritionandsalvation—aletterornotefromSondra.Itcamethroughthewarden’sofficeandbythehandoftheRev.PrestonGuilford,theProtestantchaplainoftheprison,butwasnotsigned.Itwas,however,ongoodpaper,andbecausetheruleoftheprisonsorequiringhadbeenopenedandread.Nevertheless,onaccountofthenatureofthecontentswhichseemedtoboththewardenandtheRev.Guilfordtobemorecharitableandpunitivethanotherwise,andbecauseplainly,ifnotverifiably,itwasfromthatMissXofreputeornotorietyinconnectionwithhistrial,itwasdecided,afterduedeliberation,thatClydeshouldbepermittedtoreadit—eventhatitwasbestthatheshould.Perhapsitwouldproveofvalueasalesson.
