Asfortheothers,throughoutthisexcitement,onecouldhearthemwalkingandmumblingorcallingtotheguardstodosomething.AndasforClyde,neverhavingexperiencedorimaginedsuchascene,hewasliterallyshiveringwithfearandhorror.Allthroughthelastnightofthisman’slifehelayonhispallet,chasingphantoms.Sothiswaswhatdeathwaslikehere;mencried,prayed,theylosttheirminds—yetthedeadlyprocesswasinnowayhalted,foralltheirterror.Instead,atteno’clockandinordertoquietallthosewhowereleft,acoldlunchwasbroughtinandoffered—butwithnoneeatingsavetheChinamanovertheway.
Andthenatfourthefollowingmorning—thekeepersinchargeofthedeadlyworkcomingsilentlyalongthemainpassageanddrawingtheheavygreencurtainswithwhichthecellswereequippedsothatnonemightseethefatalprocessionwhichwasyettoreturnalongthetransversepassagefromtheolddeathhousetotheexecutionroom.AndyetwithClydeandalltheotherswakingandsittingupatthesound.
