AndthenBurtonBurleighdecidingthatitmightnotreallyhavebeenthetripod,afterallwithwhichhehadstruckherbutpossiblyandevenprobablythesomewhatheavierbodyofthecameraitself,sinceanedgeofitwouldexplainthewoundonthetopoftheheadandtheflatsurfacewouldexplainthegeneralwoundsonherface.Andbecauseofthisconclusion,withoutanyknowledgeonthepartofClyde,however,MasonsecuringdiversfromamongthewoodsmenoftheregionandsettingthemtodivingintheimmediatevicinityofthespotwhereRoberta’sbodyhadbeenfound,withtheresultthatafteranentireday’sdivingonthepartofsix—andbecauseofapromisedandsubstantialreward,oneJackBogartarosewiththeverycamerawhichClyde,astheboathadturnedover,hadletfall.Worse,afterexaminationitprovedtocontainarolloffilms,whichuponbeingsubmittedtoanexpertchemistfordevelopment,showedfinallytobeaseriesofpicturesofRoberta,madeonshore—onesittingonalog,asecondposedbythesideoftheboatonshore,athirdreachinguptowardthebranchesofatree—allverydimandwater-soakedbutstilldecipherable.AndtheexactmeasurementsofthebroadestsideofthecameracorrespondinginageneralwaytothelengthandbreadthofthewoundsuponRoberta’sface,whichcauseditnowtoseempositivethattheyhaddiscoveredtheimplementwherewithClydehaddeliveredtheblows.
