           Sansacouldgowhereshewouldsolongasshedidnottrytoleavethecastle,buttherewasnowhereshewantedtogo.

           Shecrossedoverthedrymoatwithitscruelironspikesandmadeherwayupthenarrowturnpikestair,butwhenshereachedthedoorofherbedchambershecouldnotbeartoenter.Theverywallsoftheroommadeherfeeltrapped;evenwiththewindowopenedwideitfeltasthoughtherewerenoairtobreathe.

           Turningbacktothestair,Sansaclimbed.Thesmokeblottedoutthestarsandthethincrescentofmoon,sotheroofwasdarkandthickwithshadows.Yetfromhereshecouldseeeverything:theRedKeep’stalltowersandgreatcorner-forts,themazeofcitystreetsbeyond,tosouthandwesttheriverrunningblack,thebaytotheeast,thecolumnsofsmokeandcinders,andfires,fireseverywhere.Soldierscrawledoverthecitywallslikeantswithtorches,andcrowdedthehoardingsthathadsproutedfromtheramparts.DownbytheMudGate,outlinedagainstthedriftingsmoke,shecouldmakeoutthevagueshapeofthethreehugecatapults,thebiggestanyonehadeverseen,overtoppingthewallsbyagoodtwentyfeet.Yetnoneofitmadeherfeellessfearful.Astabwentthroughher,sosharpthatSansasobbedandclutchedatherbelly.Shemighthavefallen,butashadowmovedsuddenly,andstrongfingersgrabbedherarmandsteadiedher.

           Shegrabbedamerlonforsupport,herfingersscrabblingattheroughstone."Letgoofme,"shecried."Letgo."
