Andthoughthenarratoronlysufferedanordinaryexile,heshouldnotforgetthose,likethejournalistRambertandothers,whosesituationwasdifferent,andforwhomthepainofseparationwasamplifiedbythefactthat,beingtravellerssurprisedbytheplagueinthetown,theywereseparatednotonlyfromthepersontowhomtheycouldnotreturn,butfromtheirhomesaswell.Inthemidstofthegeneralexile,theywerethemostexiledbecausewhiletimearousedinthem,asinallofus,thatanguishpeculiartoit,theyweretrappedinaparticularspaceandwereconstantlyrunningupagainstthebarriersthatseparatedthispestilentialretreatfromtheirlosthomes.Thesenodoubtwerethepeopleonesawwanderingatanytimeofthedaythroughthedustytown,silentlyinvokingeveningsthattheyalonecouldknowandmorningsintheirownlands.Theywouldnourishtheirpainwithimponderablesignsanddisconcertingmessages,likeaflightofswallows,arosysunsetorthosepeculiarraysthatthesunsometimescastsonemptystreets.Theyclosedtheireyestotheexternalworldwhichcanalwaysofferanescapefromanything,stubbornlynurturingtheirall-too-realfantasiesandpursuingwithalltheirstrengththeimagesofalandinwhichacertainlight,twoorthreehills,afavouritetreeandthefacesofwomencomposedaclimatethatnothingcouldreplace.
