Thereweremanyqueerlittleprojections,andattics,andchimneys,andnooksandcrannies,soitwasneverboring.Anditcertainlywasexciting,asKarlssonhadsaid,becausenowandthenyouverynearlydidfalldown.Inoneplacetherewasquiteawidegapbetweentwohouses,anditwasinjustsuchaplacethatEricalmostfell.ButKarlssoncaughtholdofhimatthelastmomentwhenoneofhislegshadalreadybeguntoslideovertheedgeoftheroof.
"Goodfun,isn’tit?"saidKarlssonashehauledEricupagain."That’sjustwhatImeant.Doitagain!"
ButEricsaidhewouldrathernotdoitagain.Itwasalittletoocloseforhim.Therewereseveralplaceswhereyouhadtoclingwitharmsandlegstoavoidfalling,andKarlssonwantedErictohaveasmuchfunaspossible,sohedidnotalwaystakehimbytheeasiestroute.
"Ithinkweoughttoplaysometricks,"saidKarlsson."Igenerallystrollaroundontheroofsintheevening,playinglittletricksonthepeoplewholiveinalltheseatticrooms."
"Whatdoyoudo?"askedEric.
"Iplaydifferenttricksondifferentpeople,ofcourse.Neverthesametricktwice.TheWorld’sBestTricker—guesswhothatis!"
Atthatinstantalittlechildbegantocrynearby.Erichadheardthecryingbefore,butthenithadstopped.Thechildhadtakenarest,hesupposed.Nowitstartedagain,andthecryingcamefromthenearestattic.Itwassuchasadandforlornsound.
