Thiscoffeetimeafterdinnerwasnearlythenicestpartofthewholeday.YoucouldtalktoMommyandDaddy,andtheylistenedtowhatyouhadtosay.Otherwisetheydidnotalwayshavetimetolisten.Itwasfun,too,hearingBettyandBobbyteasingeachotherandtalkingimportantlyaboutschool.Theirschoolwasevidentlydifferent,andamoreimportantkindthanthegradeschoolthatEricattended.Helongedtotellthemallabouthisschool,butnooneexceptMommyandDaddywasinterestedinwhathappenedthere.BobbyandBettyonlylaughed,andEricwascarefultoavoidsayinganythingthatwouldmakeBobbyandBettylaughinthatannoyingway.Therewasnotmuchuseintheirtryingtoteasehim;hewasanexpertatteasingback—youhadtobewithabrotherlikeBobbyandasisterlikeBetty.
"Well,Eric,wasyourhomeworkdoneproperlyfortoday?"askedMommy.
ThiswasnotthekindoftalkthatEricliked,butsinceMommyhadsaidnothingaboutthatlumpofsugar,hehadbetterputupwithherquestioning,hesupposed.
"Oh,yes,myhomeworkwasallcorrect,"heansweredglumly.
AllthetimehewasthinkingofKarlsson.HowcouldanybodyexpecthimtorememberabouthishomeworkwhenhewaswonderingwhathadhappenedtoKarlsson?
"Whatdidyouhaveforhomework?"askedDaddy.
Ericwasannoyed.Whycouldn’ttheystoptalkingaboutschool?Youdidnotsitcozilyinfrontofthefiresopeoplecouldtalkabouthomework.
