           Karlssonwaitsforamomentortwotolettheenginewarmup; thenheaccelerates,takesoff,andglidesonhiswaywithallthedignityandpoiseofastatesman; thatis,ifyoucanpictureastatesmanwithamotoronhisback. 

           Karlssonisverycontentedinhislittlehouseontopoftheroof. Intheeveningshesitsonhisfrontdoorstep,smokingapipeandwatchingthestars. Naturally,youcanseethestarsmuchbetterfromtheroofthanfromanywhereelseinthehouse,soitisreallysurprisingthatmorepeopledonotliveonroofs. Buttheoccupantsofthehousedon’tknowthatyoucanliveonaroof; theydon’tevenknowthatKarlssonhasacottageupthere,itissowellhiddenbehindthebigchimney. Besides,mostpeopledon’tnoticelittlehouseslikeKarlsson’s,noteveniftheytripoverthem.

           Butthenhebegantosweepthechimneyandforgotallaboutthehouseandnevergaveitanotherthought. 

           ItwasniceforErictobecomeacquaintedwithKarlsson, because,wheneverKarlssonflewpast,lifebecameadventurousandexciting. MaybeKarlssonwaspleasedtomaketheacquaintanceofEric,too, foritmustbealittledullsometimestoliveallaloneinahousewhichnobodyknowsisthere. Itmustbepleasanttohearsomebodycallingout,"Hi-ho,Karlsson!"whenyouflypast.
