Buttheshieldsweregoodprotection,andthewheelspearsbrokewhentheyhitthem.Thewheelofonechariothitthecornerofashield,andthechariotturnedover.Anotherdriver,closebehind,crashedintoitandwasthrownout.Hischariotracedon,anditswheelspearskilledhimashetriedtogetaway.Athirdchariotwasveryclose,andbothvehiclescrashedintothegate.
Maximusranforoneofthebrokenchariotsandcutthehorsefree.Hejumpedontothehorseandrodefasttowardonechariot.ThedriverwaswatchingMaximuscarefully.Hedidnotseethathewasveryclosetoanothervehicle.Theirwheelstouched.Bothdriverswerethrownontothesand.OnewaskilledbyMaximus’sspear,andtheotherdiedunderthefeetofhishorse.
Thegladiatorspulledtwocrashedchariotsintothepathoftheothers,whowereforcedtoslowdown.Thentheyrushedatthedrivers,strikingthemwiththeirspears.
Maximuslookedaround.Alltheirenemiesweredead.Heclimbeddownfromhishorse,andthegladiatorsstoodoneithersideofhim.Hakenwasamongthem.
Inthearena,Maximus,forthefirsttime,raisedhisrightarmandswordhigh.Itwasthegladiators’traditionalsignofbeatingdeath.Thecrowdcheeredwildly.
