AstheycametothegatesCirdantheShipwrightcameforthtogreetthem.Verytallhewas,andhisbeardwaslong,andhewasgreyandold,savethathiseyeswerekeenasstars;andhelookedatthemandbowed,andsaid:"Allisnowready."
ThenCirdanledthemtotheHavens,andtherewasawhiteshiplying,anduponthequaybesideagreatgreyhorsestoodafigurerobedallinwhiteawaitingthem.AsheturnedandcametowardsthemFrodosawthatGandalfnowworeopenlyuponhishandtheThirdRing,NaryatheGreat,andthestoneuponitwasredasfire.Thenthosewhoweretogowereglad,fortheyknewthatGandalfalsowouldtakeshipwiththem.
ButSamwasnowsorrowfulatheart,anditseemedtohimthatifthepartingwouldbebitter,moregrievousstillwouldbethelongroadhomealone.Butevenastheystoodthere,andtheElvesweregoingaboard,andallwasbeingmadereadytodepart,uprodeMerryandPippiningreathaste.
