TheywereservicepersonnelfromtheDepartmentofIntertemporalTransportation,indun-grayuniformswithshoulderpatchesshowingared,double-headedarrowagainstablackbackground.Theyusedintricateforce-fieldequipmenttotestthekettlemotorsandthedegreesofhyper-freedomalongthekettleways.Theyhad,Harlanimagined,littletheoreticalknowledgeoftemporalengineering,butitwasobviousthattheyhadavastpracticalknowledgeofthesubject.
HarlanhadnotlearnedmuchconcerningMaintenancewhenhewasaCub.Or,toputitmoreaccurately,hehadnotreallywishedtolearn.CubswhodidnotmakethegradewereputintoMaintenance.The"unspecializedprofession"(astheeuphemismhadit)wasthehallmarkoffailureandtheaverageCubautomaticallyavoidedthesubject.
Yetnow,ashewatchedtheMaintenancemenatwork,theyseemedtoHarlantobequietly,tensionlesslyefficient,reasonablyhappy.
Whynot?TheyoutnumberedtheSpecialists,the"trueEternals,"tentoone.Theyhadasocietyoftheirown,residentiallevelsdevotedtothem,pleasuresoftheirown.
