           SirJamesChettamhadreturnedfromtheshortjourneywhichhadkepthimabsentforacoupleofdays,andhadchangedhisdress,intendingtorideovertoTiptonGrange.HishorsewasstandingatthedoorwhenMrs.Cadwalladerdroveup,andheimmediatelyappearedtherehimself,whipinhand.LadyChettamhadnotyetreturned,butMrs.Cadwallader’serrandcouldnotbedespatchedinthepresenceofgrooms,sosheaskedtobetakenintotheconservatorycloseby,tolookatthenewplants;andoncomingtoacontemplativestand,shesaid

           "Ihaveagreatshockforyou;Ihopeyouarenotsofargoneinloveasyoupretendedtobe."

           Itwasofnouseprotesting,againstMrs.Cadwallader’swayofputtingthings.ButSirJames’scountenancechangedalittle.Hefeltavaguealarm.

           "IdobelieveBrookeisgoingtoexposehimselfafterall.IaccusedhimofmeaningtostandforMiddlemarchontheLiberalside,andhelookedsillyandneverdeniedittalkedabouttheindependentline,andtheusualnonsense."

           "Isthatall?"saidSirJames,muchrelieved.
