           Brooke,insteadofwishinghim,asbefore,tocometotheGrangeoftenerthanwasquiteagreeabletohimself,seemednowtocontrivethatheshouldgothereaslittleaspossible.ThiswasashufflingconcessionofMr.Brooke’stoSirJamesChettam’sindignantremonstrance;andWill,awaketotheslightesthintinthisdirection,concludedthathewastobekeptawayfromtheGrangeonDorothea’saccount.Herfriends,then,regardedhimwithsomesuspicion?Theirfearswerequitesuperfluous:theywereverymuchmistakeniftheyimaginedthathewouldputhimselfforwardasaneedyadventurertryingtowinthefavorofarichwoman.
