           Theyhadnearlythesamepreferencesinsilks,patternsforunderclothing,china-ware,andclergymen;theyconfidedtheirlittletroublesofhealthandhouseholdmanagementtoeachother,andvariouslittlepointsofsuperiorityonMrs.Bulstrode’sside,namely,moredecidedseriousness,moreadmirationformind,andahouseoutsidethetown,sometimesservedtogivecolortotheirconversationwithoutdividingthemwell-meaningwomenboth,knowingverylittleoftheirownmotives.

           Mrs.Bulstrode,payingamorningvisittoMrs.Plymdale,happenedtosaythatshecouldnotstaylonger,becauseshewasgoingtoseepoorRosamond.

           "Whydoyousay‘poorRosamond’?"saidMrs.Plymdale,around-eyedsharplittlewoman,likeatamedfalcon.

           "Sheissopretty,andhasbeenbroughtupinsuchthoughtlessness.Themother,youknow,hadalwaysthatlevityabouther,whichmakesmeanxiousforthechildren."

           "Well,Harriet,ifIamtospeakmymind,"saidMrs.Plymdale,withemphasis,"Imustsay,anybodywouldsupposeyouandMr.Bulstrodewouldbedelightedwithwhathashappened,foryouhavedoneeverythingtoputMr.Lydgateforward."

           "Selina,whatdoyoumean?"saidMrs.Bulstrode,ingenuinesurprise.

           "NotbutwhatIamtrulythankfulforNed’ssake,"saidMrs.Plymdale."Hecouldcertainlybetteraffordtokeepsuchawifethansomepeoplecan;butIshouldwishhimtolookelsewhere.
