           Dorotheahadlearnedtoreadthesignsofherhusband’smood,andshesawthatthemorninghadbecomemorefoggythereduringthelasthour.Shewasgoingsilentlytoherdeskwhenhesaid,inthatdistanttonewhichimpliedthathewasdischargingadisagreeableduty

           "Dorothea,hereisaletterforyou,whichwasenclosedinoneaddressedtome."

           Itwasaletteroftwopages,andsheimmediatelylookedatthesignature.

           TherehadbeennoclashingoftemperbetweenDorotheaandherhusbandsincethatlittleexplosioninRome,whichhadleftsuchstrongtracesinhermindthatithadbeeneasiereversincetoquellemotionthantoincurtheconsequenceofventingit.
