AtpresentIhavetomakethenewsettlerLydgatebetterknowntoanyoneinterestedinhimthanhecouldpossiblybeeventothosewhohadseenthemostofhimsincehisarrivalinMiddlemarch.Forsurelyallmustadmitthatamanmaybepuffedandbelauded,envied,ridiculed,counteduponasatoolandfalleninlovewith,oratleastselectedasafuturehusband,andyetremainvirtuallyunknown—knownmerelyasaclusterofsignsforhisneighbors’falsesuppositions.Therewasageneralimpression,however,thatLydgatewasnotaltogetheracommoncountrydoctor,andinMiddlemarchatthattimesuchanimpressionwassignificantofgreatthingsbeingexpectedfromhim.Foreverybody’sfamilydoctorwasremarkablyclever,andwasunderstoodtohaveimmeasurableskillinthemanagementandtrainingofthemostskittishorviciousdiseases.Theevidenceofhisclevernesswasofthehigherintuitiveorder,lyinginhislady-patients’immovableconviction,andwasunassailablebyanyobjectionexceptthattheirintuitionswereopposedbyothersequallystrong;eachladywhosawmedicaltruthinWrenchand"thestrengtheningtreatment"regardingTollerand"theloweringsystem"asmedicalperdition.
