Theblackbonesreclinedatfulllengthwithoneshoulderagainstthetree,andslowlytheeyelidsroseandthesunkeneyeslookedupatme,enormousandvacant,akindofblind,whiteflickerinthedepthsoftheorbs,whichdiedoutslowly.Themanseemedyoung—almostaboy—butyouknowwiththemit’shardtotell.IfoundnothingelsetodobuttoofferhimoneofmygoodSwede’sship’sbiscuitsIhadinmypocket.Thefingersclosedslowlyonitandheld—therewasnoothermovementandnootherglance.Hehadtiedabitofwhiteworstedroundhisneck—Why?Wheredidhegetit?Wasitabadge—anornament—acharm—apropitiatoryact?Wasthereanyideaatallconnectedwithit?Itlookedstartlingroundhisblackneck,thisbitofwhitethreadfrombeyondtheseas.
