Itmayseemmarvellousthat,withtheworldbeforeher—keptbynorestrictiveclauseofhercondemnationwithinthelimitsofthePuritansettlement,soremoteandsoobscure—freetoreturntoherbirth-place,ortoanyotherEuropeanland,andtherehidehercharacterandidentityunderanewexterior,ascompletelyasifemergingintoanotherstateofbeing—andhavingalsothepassesofthedark,inscrutableforestopentoher,wherethewildnessofhernaturemightassimilateitselfwithapeoplewhosecustomsandlifewerealienfromthelawthathadcondemnedher—itmayseemmarvellousthatthiswomanshouldstillcallthatplaceherhome,where,andwhereonly,shemustneedsbethetypeofshame.
