Onthispublicholiday,asonallotheroccasionsforsevenyearspast,Hesterwascladinagarmentofcoarsegraycloth.Notmorebyitshuethanbysomeindescribablepeculiarityinitsfashion,ithadtheeffectofmakingherfadepersonallyoutofsightandoutline;whileagainthescarletletterbroughtherbackfromthistwilightindistinctness,andrevealedherunderthemoralaspectofitsownillumination.Herface,solongfamiliartothetownspeople,showedthemarblequietudewhichtheywereaccustomedtobeholdthere.Itwaslikeamask;or,ratherlikethefrozencalmnessofadeadwoman’sfeatures;owingthisdrearyresemblancetothefactthatHesterwasactuallydead,inrespecttoanyclaimofsympathy,andhaddepartedoutoftheworldwithwhichshestillseemedtomingle.
Itmightbe,onthisoneday,thattherewasanexpressionunseenbefore,nor,indeed,vividenoughtobedetectednow;unlesssomepreternaturallygiftedobservershouldhavefirstreadtheheart,andhaveafterwardssoughtacorrespondingdevelopmentinthecountenanceandmien.
