Hehadbythistimereachedhisdwellingontheedgeoftheburialground,and,hasteningupthestairs,tookrefugeinhisstudy.Theministerwasgladtohavereachedthisshelter,withoutfirstbetrayinghimselftotheworldbyanyofthosestrangeandwickedeccentricitiestowhichhehadbeencontinuallyimpelledwhilepassingthroughthestreets.Heenteredtheaccustomedroom,andlookedaroundhimonitsbooks,itswindows,itsfireplace,andthetapestriedcomfortofthewalls,withthesameperceptionofstrangenessthathadhauntedhimthroughouthiswalkfromtheforestdellintothetownandthitherward.
