TheauthorofithappenedtobeanoldenemyoftheproprietorofthejournalonwhichIwasemployed;—myeulogisticreviewofthehatedindividual,unfortunatelyforme,appeared,withtheresultthatprivatespiteoutweighedpublicjustice,andIwasimmediatelydismissed.
AfterthisIdraggedoninasufficientlymiserableway,doing‘hackwork’forthedailies,andlivingonpromisesthatneverbecamerealities,till,asIhavesaid,intheearlyJanuaryofthebitterwinteralludedto,Ifoundmyselfliterallypennilessandfacetofacewithstarvation,owingamonth’srentbesidesforthepoorlodgingIoccupiedinabackstreetnotfarfromtheBritishMuseum.Ihadbeenoutalldaytrudgingfromonenewspaperofficetoanother,seekingforworkandfindingnone.Everyavailablepostwasfilled.Ihadalsotried,unsuccessfully,todisposeofamanuscriptofmyown—aworkoffictionwhichIknewhadsomemerit,butwhichallthe‘readers’inthepublishingofficesappearedtofindexceptionallyworthless.These‘readers’Ilearned,weremostofthemnoveliststhemselves,whoreadotherpeople’sproductionsintheirsparemomentsandpassedjudgmentonthem.Ihavealwaysfailedtoseethejusticeofthisarrangement;tomeitseemsmerelythewaytofostermediocritiesandsuppressoriginality.
