AttheperiodIamspeakingofhowever,I,whohavesincebeenoneofthemostenviedofmen,knewthecruelmeaningofthewordhunger,toowell—thegnawingpain,thesickfaintness,thedeadlystupor,theinsatiableanimalcravingformerefood,allofwhichsensationsarefrightfulenoughtothosewhoare,unhappily,dailyinuredtothem,butwhichwhentheyafflictonewhohasbeentenderlyrearedandbroughtuptoconsiderhimselfa‘gentleman,’—Godsavethemark!areperhapsstillmorepainfultobear.AndIfeltthatIhadnotdeservedtosufferthewretchednessinwhichIfoundmyself.Ihadworkedhard.Fromthetimemyfatherdied,leavingmetodiscoverthateverypennyofthefortuneIimaginedhepossessedwasduetoswarmingcreditors,andthatnothingofallourhouseandestatewaslefttomeexceptajewelledminiatureofmymotherwhohadlostherownlifeingivingmebirth—fromthattimeIsay,Ihadputmyshouldertothewheelandtoiledlateandearly.IhadturnedmyUniversityeducationtotheonlyuseforwhichitorIseemedfitted—literature.IhadsoughtforemploymentonalmosteveryjournalinLondon—refusedbymany,takenontrialbysome,butgettingsteadypayfromnone.Whoeverseekstolivebybrainandpenaloneis,atthebeginningofsuchacareer,treatedasasortofsocialpariah.Nobodywantshim—everybodydespiseshim.Hiseffortsarederided,hismanuscriptsareflungbacktohimunread,andheislesscaredforthanthecondemnedmurdereringaol.
