Whyindeed!Whyshouldthewickedflourishlikeagreenbay-tree?Ihaveoftenthoughtaboutit.NowhoweverIbelieveIcouldhelptosolvetheproblemoutofmyownpersonalexperience.But...suchanexperience!Whowillcreditit?Whowillbelievethatanythingsostrangeandterrificeverchancedtothelotofamortalman?Noone.Yetitistrue;—truerthanmuchso-calledtruth.MoreoverIknowthatmanymenarelivingthroughmanysuchincidentsashaveoccurredtome,underpreciselythesameinfluence,consciousperhapsattimes,thattheyareinthetanglesofsin,buttooweakofwilltobreakthenetinwhichtheyhavebecomevoluntarilyimprisoned.Willtheybetaught,Iwonder,thelessonIhavelearned?Inthesamebitterschool,underthesameformidabletaskmaster?WilltheyrealizeasIhavebeenforcedtodo—aye,totheveryfibresofmyintellectualperception—thevast,individual,activeMind,whichbehindallmatter,worksunceasingly,thoughsilently,averyeternalandpositiveGod?Ifso,thendarkproblemswillbecomecleartothem,andwhatseemsinjusticeintheworldwillprovepureequity!ButIdonotwritewithanyhopeofeitherpersuadingorenlighteningmyfellow-men.Iknowtheirobstinacytoowell;—Icangaugeitbymyown.Myproudbeliefinmyselfwas,atonetime,nottobeoutdonebyanyhumanunitonthefaceoftheglobe.
