           Theeffect,however,ofBarbicane’scommunicationwasnotconfinedtothefrontiersoftheUnitedStates;itcrossedtheAtlanticandPacific,invadingsimultaneouslyAsiaandEurope,AfricaandOceanica.TheobservatoriesoftheUnionplacedthemselvesinimmediatecommunicationwiththoseofforeigncountries.Some,suchasthoseofParis,Petersburg,Berlin,Stockholm,Hamburg,Malta,Lisbon,Benares,Madras,andothers,transmittedtheirgoodwishes;therestmaintainedaprudentsilence,quietlyawaitingtheresult.AsfortheobservatoryatGreenwich,secondedasitwasbythetwenty-twoastronomicalestablishmentsofGreatBritain,itspokeplainlyenough.
