Fromtimetotimelightswentoutinotherhouses, butinVillaVillekullatheyshoneon. ItsohappenedthatPippiwaslearningtodancetheshottische, andshedidn’twanttogotobeduntilshewassureshecoulddoit. Atlast,however,thelightswentoutinthewindowsofVillaVillekullatoo.
ThetrampswaitedquiteawhileuntiltheyweresureMr.Nilssonwouldhavegonetosleep. Atlasttheycreptquietlyuptothekitchendoorandpreparedtoopenitwiththeirburglartools. Meanwhileoneofthem—hisname,asamatteroffact,wasBloom—justhappenedtofeelthedoorknob. Thedoorwasnotlocked!
"Well,somepeoplearesmart!"hewhisperedtohiscompanion."thedoorisopen!"
"Somuchthebetterforus,"answeredhiscompanion,ablack-hairedmancalledThunder-Karlssonbythosewhoknewhim. Thunder-Karlssonturnedonhispocketflashlight, andtheycreptintothekitchen. Therewasnoonethere. InthenextroomwasPippi’sbed,andtherealsostoodMr.Nilsson’slittledollbed.
Thunder-Karlssonopenedthedoorandlookedaroundcarefully. Everythingwasquietasheplayedhisflashlightaroundtheroom. WhenthelighttouchedPippi’sbedthetwotrampswereamazedtoseenothingbutapairoffeetonthepillow. Pippi,asusual,hadherheadunderthecoversatthefootofthebed.
"Thatmustbethegirl,"whisperedThunder-KarlssontoBloom. "Andnodoubtshesleepssoundly. ButwhereintheworldisNilsson,doyousuppose?"
"Mr.Nilsson,ifyouplease,"camePippi’scalmvoicefromunderthecovers. "Mr.Nilssonisinthelittlegreendollbed."
