TommyhadbroughtalongadaggerPippihadgivenhim,andwithithecutwalkingsticksforAnnikaandforhimself. Hecuthisthumbalittletoo,butthatdidn’tmatter.
"Maybeweoughttopicksomemushrooms,"saidPippi,andshebrokeoffapretty,rosyone. "Iwonderifit’spossibletoeatit?"shecontinued. "Atanyrate,itisn’tpossibletodrinkit—thatmuchIknow;sothereisnochoiceexcepttoeatit. Maybeit’spossible."
Shetookabigbiteandswallowedit. "Itwaspossible,"sheannounced,delighted. Yessirree,we’llcertainlystewtherestofthissometime,"shesaidandthrewithighoverthetreetops. "Whathaveyougotinyourbasket?"askedAnnika."Isitsomethinggood?"
"Iwouldn’ttellyouforathousanddollars,"saidPippi. "Firstwemustfindagoodpicnicspot."
Thechildreneagerlybegantolookforsuchaplace. Annikafoundalargeflatstonethatshethoughtwassatisfactory,butitwascoveredwithredants. "Idon’twanttositwiththan,"saidPippi,"becauseI’mnotacquaintedwiththem."
"Andbesides,theybite,"saidTommy.
"Dothey?"saidPippi."Bitebackthen."
ThenTommyfoundalittleclearingamongthehazelbushes,andhethoughtthatwouldbeagoodplace.
"Oh,no,that’snotsunnyenoughformyfreckles,"saidPippi,"andIdothinkfrecklesaresoattractive."
Fartherontheycametoahillthatwaseasytoclimb. Ononesideofthehillwasanicesunnyrockjustlikealittlebalcony,andtheretheysatdown.
"NowshutyoureyeswhileIsetthetable,"saidPippi.
