"Whybesorry?Whycomplain?"saidPippi. "Youcomedownheretoo,andthenwecanplaythatwearepiningawayinadungeon."
"Neverinthisworld!"saidAnnika, andtobeonthesafesidesheclimbedrightdownoutofthetree.
"Annika,Icanseeyouthroughthecrack,"criedPippi. "Don’tsteponthecoffeepot; it’sanoldwell-manneredcoffeepotthatneverdidanyoneanyharm. Itcan’thelpitthatitdoesn’thaveaspoutanylonger.
Annikawentuptothetreetrunk,andthroughalittlecrackshesawtheverytipofPippi’sfinger. Thiscomfortedheragooddeal,butshewasstillworried.
"Pippi,can’tyoureallygetup?"sheasked.
Pippi’sfingerdisappeared,andinlessthanaminuteherfacepoppedoutoftheholeupinthetree.
"MaybeIcanifItryveryhard,"shesaidandpartedthefoliagewithherhands.
"Ifit’saseasyasallthattogetup,"saidTommy,whowasstillupinthetree, "thenIwanttocomedownandpineawayalittletoo."
"Wait,"saidPippi,"Ithinkwellgetaladder.
Shecrawledoutoftheholeandhurrieddownthetree. Thensheranafteraladder,pusheditupthetree,andletitdownintothehole.
Tommywaswildtogodown. Itwasdifficulttoclimbtothehole,becauseitwassohighup, butTommywasbrave.Andhewasn’tafraidtoclimbdownintothedarkhollowinthetrunk. Annikawatchedhimdisappearandwonderedifshewouldeverseehimagain. Shepeekedinthroughthecrack.
"Annika,"cameTommy’svoice. "Youcan’timaginehowwonderfulitishere.Youmustcomeintoo. Itisn’ttheleastbitdangerouswhenyouhavealaddertoclimbon.
