ShehadahorseofherownthatshehadboughtwithoneofhermanygoldpiecesthedayshecamehometoVillaVillekulla. Shehadalwayslongedforahorse, andnowherehewas,livingontheporch. WhenPippiwantedtodrinkherafternooncoffeethere, shesimplyliftedhimdownintothegarden.
BesideVillaVillekullawasanothergarden andanotherhouse. Inthathouselivedafatherandmotherandtwocharmingchildren,aboyandagirl. Theboy’snamewasTommyandthegirl’sAnnika. Theyweregood,wellbroughtup,andobedientchildren. Tommywouldneverthinkofbitinghisnails,andhealwaysdidexactlywhathismothertoldhimtodo. Annikaneverfussedwhenshedidn’tgetherownway,andshealwayslookedprettyinherlittlewell-ironedcottondresses;shetookthegreatestcarenottogetthandirty. TommyandAnnikaplayednicelywitheachotherintheirgarden, buttheyhadoftenwishedforaplaymate. WhilePippiwasstillsailingontheoceanwithherfather, theyoftenusedtohangoverthefenceandsaytoeachother, "Isn’titsillythatnobodyevermovesintothathouse. Somebodyoughttolivetheresomebodywithchildren."
OnthatlovelysummereveningwhenPippiforthefirsttimesteppedoverthethresholdofVillaVillekulla, TommyandAnnikawerenotathome. Theyhadgonetovisittheirgrandmotherforaweek; andsotheyhadnoideathatanybodyhadmovedintothehousenextdoor.
