Afterthepolicemenhadstoodthereawhilewonderingwhattodo,theywentandgotaladder,leaneditagainstoneofthegablesofthehouseandthenclimbedup,firstonepolicemanandthentheother,togetPippidown. Theylookedalittlescaredwhentheyclimbedoutontheridgepoleand,carefullybalancingthemselveswentstepbystep,towardPippi.
"Don’tbescared,"criedPippi."There’snothingtobeafraidof.It’sjustfun."
WhenthepolicemenwereafewstepsawayfromPippi,downshejumpedfromthechimneyand,screechingandlaughing, ranalongtheridgepoletotheoppositegable. Afewfeetfromthehousestoodatree.
"NowI’mgoingtodive,"shecriedandjumpedrightdownintothegreencrownofthetree,caughtholdofabranch, swungbackandforthawhile,andthenletherselffalltotheground. Quickasawinkshedashedaroundtotheothersideofthehouseandtookawaytheladder.
ThepolicemenhadlookedalittlefoolishwhenPippijumped, buttheylookedevenmoresowhentheyhadbalancedthemselvesbackwardalongtheridgepoleandwereabouttoclimbdowntheladder. AtfirsttheywereveryangryatPippi,whostoodonthegroundlookingupatthem,andtheytoldherinnouncertaintermstogettheladderandbequickaboutit,orshewouldsoongetsomethingshewasn’tlookingfor.
"Whyareyousocrossatme?"askedPippireproachfully.
