TherockstruckPiggyaglancingblowfromchintoknee;theconchexplodedintoathousandwhitefragmentsandceasedtoexist.Piggy,sayingnothing,withnotimeforevenagrunt,traveledthroughtheairsidewaysfromtherock,turningoverashewent.Therockboundedtwiceandwaslostintheforest.Piggyfellfortyfeetandlandedonhisbackacrossthesquareredrockinthesea.Hisheadopenedandstuffcameoutandturnedred.Piggy’sarmsandlegstwitchedabit,likeapig’safterithasbeenkilled.Thentheseabreathedagaininalong,slowsigh,thewaterboiledwhiteandpinkovertherock;andwhenitwent,suckingbackagain,thebodyofPiggywasgone.
Thistimethesilencewascomplete.Ralph’slipsformedawordbutnosoundcame.
SuddenlyJackboundedoutfromthetribeandbeganscreamingwildly.
