           Abruptlythecrueltyofthisdesertionbecamecleartome.IhadnomeansofreachingthelandunlessIshouldchancetodriftthere.Iwasstillweak,youmustremember,frommyexposureintheboat;Iwasemptyandveryfaint,orIshouldhavehadmoreheart.ButasitwasIsuddenlybegantosobandweep,asIhadneverdonesinceIwasalittlechild.Thetearsrandownmyface.InapassionofdespairIstruckwithmyfistsatthewaterinthebottomoftheboat,andkickedsavagelyatthegunwale.IprayedaloudforGodtoletmedie.
