           Thisman,itseemedtome,hadcomeoutofImmensitymerelytosavemylife.To-morrowhewoulddropovertheside,andvanishagainoutofmyexistence.Evenhaditbeenundercommonplacecircumstances,itwouldhavemademeatriflethoughtful;butinthefirstplacewasthesingularityofaneducatedmanlivingonthisunknownlittleisland,andcoupledwiththattheextraordinarynatureofhisluggage.Ifoundmyselfrepeatingthecaptain’squestion,Whatdidhewantwiththebeasts?Why,too,hadhepretendedtheywerenothiswhenIhadremarkedaboutthematfirst?Then,again,inhispersonalattendanttherewasabizarrequalitywhichhadimpressedmeprofoundly.Thesecircumstancesthrewahazeofmysteryroundtheman.Theylaidholdofmyimagination,andhamperedmytongue.

           TowardsmidnightourtalkofLondondiedaway,andwestoodsidebysideleaningoverthebulwarksandstaringdreamilyoverthesilent,starlitsea,eachpursuinghisownthoughts.Itwastheatmosphereforsentiment,andIbeganuponmygratitude.
