Eachnightthedogswereattendedtofirst. Theyatebeforethedriversate,andnomansoughthissleeping-robetillhehadseentothefeetofthedogshedrove. Still,theirstrengthwentdown. Sincethebeginningofthewintertheyhadtravelledeighteenhundredmiles,draggingsledsthewholewearydistance;andeighteenhundredmileswilltelluponlifeofthetoughest. Buckstoodit,keepinghismatesuptotheirworkandmaintainingdiscipline,thoughhe,too,wasverytired. Billeecriedandwhimperedregularlyinhissleepeachnight. Joewassourerthanever,andSol-lekswasunapproachable,blindsideorotherside.
ButitwasDavewhosufferedmostofall. Somethinghadgonewrongwithhim. Hebecamemoremoroseandirritable,andwhencampwaspitchedatoncemadehisnest,wherehisdriverfedhim. Onceoutoftheharnessanddown,hedidnotgetonhisfeetagaintillharness-uptimeinthemorning.
